Introducing Singapore’s Public Art

Gardens

by the Bay

By Jonathan Berg, Author, Birmingham’s Public Art The Gardens by the Bay are a significant and ongoing development by Singapore to produce a huge pedestrian garden area. Today it is said to be Asia’s foremost tourist attraction and with the Flower dome being portrayed as the largest greenhouse in the world. Above it all the iconic Supertrees (Grant Associates, 2012), which have recently made the front cover of ‘The World Atlas of Public Art’. Walking around the gardens with no particular insight is fun. You come across public art installations that certainly can not be ignored. Some works have been specifically commissioned, while others have found there way here having started life elsewhere. Once again one gets a strong feel that Singapore understands the huge positivity that public art can have.

No Comparison to Birmingham!

You simply can not contrast this sculpture park with anything in Birmingham as it is on a totally different scale of investment and longevity. To me the most interesting thing was to see the depth of this public sculpture park, with only a tiny part of which we have shown here. Huge installations that complimented the stunning architecture and cityscape but equally the gardens have room for much smaller pieces that you can get up close and personal to enjoy on a human scale.
